Nowadays we see that although people are having better facilities of life, more technology which is making their life easier, more and more comforts etc., still there are sufficient number of people who are deep down not happy and satisfied with the way they are living their lives. On an average, people's lives have become very complicated; anyone you touch and ask them about their problems they either have health problems (majorly) or financial problems or family problems or relationship problems or legal issues or property litigations and many more. Common man is very very disturbed mentally. Some people are earning lot of money but they are not an exception. Somehow if we carefully observe, the life in the cities is pointless. Because cities are centred around luxury and higher standard of living. In cities everything is expensive. Food, clothing and shelter which are a fundamental requirement for everyone are very expensive on an average. Moreover, the principle of city life is "luxury is taken as a necessity". Even a low earning man dreams and works hard day and night so that he can have luxury in his life. This is actually a western idea which crept into India. If we see the traditional vedic Indian culture, people majorly lived with this idea, "Simple living and high thinking".
India is a land of villages. The glory of India and it's culture resided in the villages. Unfortunately now it is losing its glory because of the artificial glittering of the cities taking over. Villages are the place where food is produced, clothes are produced. Now to bring them to the cities it involves a lot of costs which get added on the cost when we finally purchase it; cost of transportation, cost of distribution and finally the profit of the vendor which is required for his sustenance. A person living in city has to make more money so that he can afford all these costs for his basic sustenance which would be otherwise way less if he was staying in village where the food was produced right in the next door.
One might argue that you can make a lot of money in cities whereas you couldn't be making that living in villages doing agriculture etc. City life is life of high earning, high expenses and high levels of anxiety through it all. Life in villages is of low earning, low expenses and low levels of anxiety through it all. I feel the fundamental mistake happened when our ancestors left their villages, left their agriculture land and cattle, and their houses and drifted to cities hoping to live a higher standard of life while little did they know that they were actually wealthier and happier and the cities had nothing of it to offer. They got charmed by the glitter of the cities putting themselves and the whole country into trouble.
Now cities are revealing their true color, in all major cities there is water shortage, drinking water (devoid of all natural minerals) is so expensive, vegetables we get is days old preserved with chemicals to increase shelf life, milk and milk products are adulterated, air is polluted causing so many health problems, the immunity of an average person has come down. Because of taking impure and chemically processed food people are getting so many health problems and medication in the hospitals is very costly. Therefore, no matter how much money we earn, as long as we are living in cities the money is never sufficient to tackle the problems and will never give us a sense of security, because fundamentally the situation and the place where we have put ourselves is a shaky faltering one. What to speak of the social life in cities. Because people are so busy making money for their sustenance and there are so many problems in everyone's mind, hardly one is able to spend time heartfully with other person.
Therefore, I feel in long term, we should really think, "Are we going to settle here in cities with our future generations while we are already aware of all the complications of city life?"... "When are we going to get peace of mind in life?" "And when are we going to make out time for our spiritual lives?" "Are we going to make the same mistake as our ancestors have done and put our future generations in the same unsteady situations as we are in?"
